Chapter 6: Feedback That Fortifies

Assessing through confering...How much of that are we doing?  What is holding us back?  If we are only giving feedback at the end are our students really learning?
Who is doing all the talking in our classrooms?

  1. I agree when Cris says that conferring is a talent that takes a long time to develop (p. 106). It is something that I don't do well. It is an uncomfortable process for me.

When she talks about how it is important to let the students do the work (106-107), I am not sure how to get the student to figure out what he or she did wrong. I feel that many students (and parents) expect that we correct their errors and then they just have to recopy the piece.

I do like what she says about assessment. I think that it's no secret that assessment is my big bug-a-boo. I truly like the idea (p. 112) of checking for one or two elements. I just find it totally uncomfortable to let some things slide. I think that they think if I don't mark it, it must be correct. We all know that that isn't the case. It is something that I am working on.

I also like what Cris says about putting it in writing, which is so much more my comfort zone. With the iPads, it makes it easier than ever to give real-time written feedback without a whole lot of fuss (p. 116).
